Magnetism

Through magnetic properties, forces, movements, and feedback can be realized directly within the silicone material. The typical advantages of silicone such as flexibility, robustness, and high adaptability are preserved, opening up new degrees of freedom in construction and system design.

Functional integration at material level

The integration of magnetic properties extends SMART Silicone with functional capabilities that go far beyond conventional elastomeric tasks. Magnetism is not treated as an external add-on feature but is specifically embedded and utilized within the silicone material.

This creates a material that combines mechanical, magnetic, and functional properties in one. Forces, movements, or feedback can be generated, influenced, or captured close to the material. At the same time, the typical strengths of silicone, such as elasticity, thermal and mechanical resistance, are retained.

Magnetic SMART Silicone thus forms a flexible platform for various functional concepts that, depending on the design, can operate passively, supportively, or actively.

Adhesion

Permanent magnetic properties enable a defined adhesion, holding, or guiding function directly within the silicone component.

This operating principle is particularly suited for applications where components need to be fixed, positioned, or guided without relying on rigid connecting elements.

Actuation

Through magnetic excitation, SMART Silicone can be specifically stimulated to move or change shape. The material responds to external signals and converts them into mechanical action.

This operating principle opens up new possibilities for functional motion solutions, for example to prevent particle accumulation through targeted vibrations. At the same time, the sealing effect can be optimized to operate systems more efficiently and to reliably close even the smallest gaps.

Sensing

Magnetically assisted sensing allows changes in the silicone material to be detected, for example through deformation, proximity, or movement. The material itself becomes part of the information acquisition process and supports direct feedback from the system. Changes are captured through electromagnetic, inductive, or fiber-optic effects and converted into usable signals. The silicone functions not only as a carrier but becomes an active sensor element itself.

By integrating sensor functions directly into the material, they can be implemented in a particularly space-saving manner. This opens up a wide range of possible applications, for example in robotics, where sensitive interactions are enabled directly via the silicone component.

Furthermore, the concept is suitable for safety-relevant applications such as anti-trap solutions in doors or comparable systems, where contact or pressure can be reliably detected and evaluated.
